Dr. Bernard Zeigler has received the 2015 Lifetime Professional Achievement Award for 2015 from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences’ Simulation Society, to recognize major contributions to the field of simulation that are sustained over most of a professional career, with the critical consideration being the total impact of those contributions on computer simulation.

Dr. Kenneth J. Hintz of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department has received a patent for a Buoyant Force Pump. He also received a patent in December 2013 for Cavity Detection. Among his research interests are information-based real-time sensor management.

January 2015 The National Academy of Engineering elected Dr. Harry L. Van Trees, professor emeritus and director emeritus of the Center of Excellence in Command, Control, Communications, Computing, and Intelligence at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, for contributions to detection, estimation, and modulation theory and leadership of defense communication systems.

Nicholas Clark received the special honor of Plugfest Hero for his assistance to the teams competing in the AFCEA West Plugfest in San Diego, CA. Nick served as mentor to all of the challenger teams and helped them to achieve the strong results seen by the judges.

Samuel Singapogu, PhD candidate and Graduate Research Assistant on the C4I Center C-BML project, Douglas Corner, also Graduate Research Assistant on the C4I Center C-BML project, Dr. Mohammad Ababneh, Faculty Researcher on the C-BML project, and Priscilla McAndrews, Research Laboratory Manager, received certificates of appreciation from the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization for their outstanding contributions to the development of the SISO-STD-011-2014 Standard for Coalition Battle Management Language.

Sheri Gravette, Undergraduate Research Assistant on the C4I Center SciCast Project, has won the Best Paper Award for the Environmental Systems Track, along with her co-writers Kevin Cazenas, Said Masoud, and Rayhan Ain, at the UVA IEEE Systems and Information Engineering Design Symposium 2014. Their paper, Design of a Dam Sediment Management System to Aid Water Quality Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, proposed a unique way to move the sediment that collects behind the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River and is released into the Bay in unhealthy batches after large storms. Congratulations to Eric Cawi who received an Outstanding Project Award from the Volgenau School of Engineering student project competition for his work for assisting wilderness searches by using Mapscore for improving models of lost person behavior. The NATO Technical Activity MSG-048 Coalition Battle Management Language was honored with the NATO Scientific Achievement Award for 2013 bestowed by the Modelling & Simulation Coordination Office (MSCO) of the NATO Science and Technology Organization. GMU participants named in the award are:

Congratulations to PhD student James Pope and Professor Robert Simon for receiving the best paper award at the 2013 IEEE International Workshop on Practical Issues in Building Sensor Network Applications (SenseApp ’13) for their paper “CREST: An Epoch-Oriented Routing Control Plane for Low-Power and Lossy Networks.” The workshop took place in Sydney, Australia Oct 21-24, 2013.

Dr. Sam Malek was chosen to receive the 2013 Mason Emerging Researcher/Scholar/Creator Award for outstanding young faculty. This award is given annually to young scholars who are judged most likely to make significant contributions to their fields. Sam Malek is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science.

Dr Kenneth Nidiffer, GMU adjunct professor of Software Engineering and MIST/C user, received an Outstanding Contribution Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. Nidiffer earned the award for his role in authoring the Software Extension to the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge. This publication will provide more than 500,000 project management professionals with IEEE Computer Society endorsed software engineering processes. More..

Dr. Kathryn Blackmond Laskey, Associate Director of the C4I Center and professor in the SEOR department of VSE won the Best Paper Prize at the International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium for her paper, “Crowdsourced Decision Support for Emergency Responders.”

Nicholas Clark of the C4I Center was awarded second place in the 2013 AFCEA Cyber Symposium PlugFest which was held in Baltimore, MD, 25-27 June. The 2013 AFCEA PlugFest focused on making operational cyber impacts clear to Operational Commanders.Data from technology providers used anonymized real commercial data for cyber activity on operations (cyber attacks on oil pipelines), and on communications (cell phones). Three challenger teams turned the technology provider information into clear and compelling web applications, which effectively used the information provided, while collaborating with each other.
